Resona - a hearing system that restores not just sound, but understanding

Our Story

Resona began with a simple moment. After five years, I visited my grandparents and quickly realized they could barely hear what I was saying. Conversations became fragmented, repeated, and frustrating. What stood out wasn’t just the hearing loss, but how it affected their ability to stay engaged and confident in everyday communication.

 

That experience made me realize this wasn’t limited to older adults. Hearing challenges affect people of all ages, yet current solutions focus mainly on amplifying sound, not ensuring real understanding.

 

Determined to change this, I brought together a team of students with technical expertise to build something better: a system that doesn’t just make sound louder, but makes communication clearer. We developed Resona, integrating bone conduction technology with real-time processing and AI-driven feedback to help users hear, understand, and respond in the moment.

 

Our goal is simple: to create a future where no one is left out of a conversation. What began with one moment is now a mission to make understanding accessible to everyone.

How Resona Works

Resona has two main goals:

Helping the hard of hearing hear and clearly understand communication in real time.

Uplifting users through emotional support and companionship to reduce isolation and improve everyday communication experiences.

1. Bone Conduction Vibrator

Transmits sound directly through the jawbone and temporal bone, bypassing the ear canal entirely to deliver clear audio without damaging residual hearing.

2. Voice Module & Display Screen

The cleaned audio is delivered through a bone conduction vibration system, bypassing the ear canal entirely by transmitting sound directly through the jawbone and temporal bone, reaching the auditory nerve without distortion.

3. AI Processing System

Three components work together in sequence to power every interaction. The ESP32 chip acts as the hardware control center, receiving audio input, parsing instructions, and directly operating the vibrator and screen. That data is then routed through the Xiaozhi coordination layer, which compresses, encrypts, and transfers signals in both directions between the device and the AI, keeping communication fast and stable. Finally, the large AI model interprets the speech content, identifies the user's intent and emotional state, and generates a personalized voice and text response that is sent back to the ESP32 chip to be physically executed and transmitted back to the user.
